Car Pooling

Carpooling (also known as car-sharing, ride-sharing, lift-sharing), is the shared use of a car, especially for commuting to work, often by people who each have a car but travel together to save cost and to promote other socio-environmental benefits. In some locations, there are special facilities intended to encourage carpooling such as designated pick-up points and high-occupancy vehicle lanes which only allow cars with multiple riders at certain times of the day.
Carpool projects have been around in a structured form since the mid-1970s and have recently begun to more extensively use the Internet and other software support systems. With the recent advent of mobile phones and SMS, there is a push to integrate these technologies into more flexible systems on the internet

Project Title : Online Car Pooling Services in Malaysia

Problem Statement

Due to the recent surge of global oil prices, the Malaysian government has announced measures to remove oil subsidy which has caused the price of petrol to increase by 78 cents per litre. This has caused financial problems to most Malaysians as their income is unable to sustain expenses.

Apart from that, the number of cars on Malaysian roads has increased drastically for past decade due to the thriving national economic as more people are able to own cars. This has caused heavy traffic jams throughout Malaysian roads and has caused people to waste valuable time on the road in order to reach their respective destination.

On the other hand, most Malaysians do not understand the effects of global warming as we have not experienced drastic climate changes. However, with certain parts of the world experiencing such changes which have even led to natural disasters, Malaysia may not be spared from such events in future if measures are not taken appropriately. It is widely known that, pollution by the transportation sector is one of the biggest contributors towards global warming and the high number of vehicles has been a contributing factor.

Steps taken to solve the above problem using Web 2.0 application

Basically it’s a simple application where the user has to access the website and can choose the desired location they intend to go.
The user can state the location they up to on the next day using their own vehicle. If there is another user who is looking forward to go to the same destination on the same day can interact each other and can share the same car.
For time being this is what going to be done in the project but we might enhance the project in the future.
